Diabetes in Nebraska
•Approximately 100,000 Nebraskans suffer from diabetes, and nearly 1/3 of these afflicted individuals have yet to be diagnosed.

•According to the Nebraska Health and Human Service System, groups at high risk who should be screened annually for diabetes with fasting blood glucose include those with any of the following:

     1)    Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity
     2)    Family history of diabetes
     3)    History of gestational diabetes or child weighing greater that 9 pounds at birth
     4)    History of hypertension, hightriglycerides, or low HDL cholesterol
     5)    Ethnic backround known to be at higher risk for diabetes such as: Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders

•If you have Diabetes, research indicates you may need to check your blood sugar more often than you think. Frequent testing combined with proper diet, exercise, and diabetes medications can help lower blood sugar levels.
