Post-Mastectomy Fitting

What to Expect at a Post-Mastectomy Fitting
•About six to eight weeks after breast surgery it will be time to see a post-mastectomy fitter. At this time your incision should be healed and most women are able to wear a weighted prosthesis. If you have experienced breast-conserving surgery, you may also benefit from a post-mastectomy fitting, as there are partial prostheses to help fill in the missing portion of the breast and provide symmetry.

•Medicare and most private insurance plans have coverage for breast prostheses and bras. If you are in doubt about your coverage, check with your insurance plan or ask a member of our qualified staff at Deines Pharmacy.

Who does the fitting?
•You should choose a post-mastectomy fitter who has been trained by a manufacturer-based education program to fit bras and prostheses. Certified fitters are often registered nurses who are educated and knowledgeable about mastectomy products, different surgery types, and possess the medical and academic background to handle special circumstances.

•Our certified mastectomy fitter, Colleen Deines, is a registered nurse who works in close association with local oncology and surgery clinics. Colleen can suggest a variety of ways to minimize the physical effects of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy, lumpectomy, reconstruction, and mastectomy. She provides assistance with proper selection and fit of products for the most comfortable and natural appearance, and always promises discrete, personalized service.

•At Deines Pharmacy we understand the emotional and physical needs of women following breast surgery. We have a comfortable private fitting room and a large selection of quality mastectomy products including breast forms, prostheses and mastectomy bras from Jodee® and Nearly Me®.

•Because the loss of a breast can cause an imbalance to the body, it is important to restore this balance by wearing a weighted breast form. A properly fitted breast prosthesis helps replace weight lost after breast surgery. This replacement is not merely for cosmetic or psychological reasons but for physical reasons as well.
